Her Head’s On Fire made their Frequency debut on the page earlier this month as part of The Opener, and on October 22 they made good on it in person, opening for Texas Is The Reason at The Masquerade. The quartet of Jeff Dean, Syd Jagger, Rodrigo Palma and Mike Soucy carries a résumé that runs through Garrison, Small Brown Bike, The Bomb and Saves the Day, but nothing about the set played like a victory lap. Touring behind Am I Not Your Girl?, their latest on Iodine Records and, in Jagger’s words, their most raw and visceral record yet, the band brought the kind of ’90s emo and post-hardcore urgency that made them such a natural fit on this bill.
The pairing felt less like an opening slot and more like a scene family reunion. Jagger and Texas Is The Reason’s Scott Winegard go back to their days together in I Hate Our Freedom, and that familiarity carried from the stage to the merch table. From Atlanta, the run headed down to Fest in Gainesville before Her Head’s On Fire crosses over to the UK for two weeks of shows. When we spoke with the band ahead of the tour, Jagger summed up their whole approach: “Come early, stay late and spend time with your friends.” Atlanta did exactly that.
